Course Description

Suitable for: graduates or practitioners in disciplines related to the built environment, such as architecture, building services engineering, building technology or environmental studies, who would like to develop expertise and skills in advanced modelling and simulation methods. Offers knowledge and expertise: in the effective use of building modelling and simulation methods for assessing energy and environmental performance of the built environment. A range of sophisticated simulation tools has been developed in recent years that allow professionals to predict the performance of many aspects of the built environment. These tools provide the designer with more knowledge about the environments they are creating and greater awareness of the consequences of their design decisions. However, the accessibility of these newly-developed tools to non-specialists can disguise the difficulty of using them wisely and safely. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of simulation, using both computational analysis and physical scale modelling, attending to the practicalities and limitations of their use. Course Description: This course belongs to the MSc Degree Suite described above. After an introduction to the climatic forces which affect buildings, there are modules which focus on specific aspects of building performance, providing an opportunity for the acquisition of both academic foundation and practical skills in the evaluation of building performance by simulation: ? The calculation of daylight availability, incident solar radiation, shadingovershadowing effects and artificial lighting. ? The thermal performance of buildings and the pivotal role played by computational analysis tools in achieving efficiency and comfort. ? The simulation and analysis of ventilation and air flow through and around buildings. ? The appropriate use of mechanical services in buildings, and appropriate methods for their assessment.
