Course Description

During the course Notable aspects Special features of the programme include: - access to expertise on psychology-related placement opportunities - coverage of the biological basis of chronic disorders. Teaching methods Teaching methods include: - lectures - seminars - workshops - independent study - tutorials Learning materials You will be issued with a Programme Handbook at the start of the programme. Module Study Guides will be provided at the start of each module and these will indicate essential texts, journals and website addresses. Lecture notes and handouts will be available from the programme team and on Blackboard (the University s e-learning platform). Student support Module Leaders provide support, guidance and advice during the modules and the preparation of assignments. In addition, each student has a personal tutor. Learning Resource Centres within the University have specialist subject librarians who can provide assistance on locating journals and other resources. Coursework Assessment includes a variety of coursework and examination tasks, e.g. presentations, essays and reports. On course completion Exit skills At the end of the programme you should be able to demonstrate a scholarly, critical, evaluative and self-reflective knowledge in the following areas: 1. The complex interface between theory and practice in applying psychology to health, illness and health care 2. The key theoretical perspectives in explaining health, illness and the health care process 3. The range of measurement techniques, methodologies and analytical procedures used in both research and application of psychology to health, illness and health care. 4. The ethical and professional issues involved in both research and application of psychology to health, illness and health care. 5. The role of the health psychologist within a broad range of social, cultural, political and organisational contexts. 6. The synthesis and evaluation of academic literature to answer a novel research question within health psychology. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate skills, competencies and a range of expertise in the following areas: 1. The techniques appropriate to psychological research within the context of health, illness and health care 2. The communication of research results, theoretical concepts and psychological approaches in written and oral format 3. The critical evaluation of theories, concepts and issues in psychology applied to health, illness and health care 4. Applying psychology within standards appropriate for the profession 5. Working independently 6. Working in group activities 7. Assessing your own and others’ performance. Career progression On completion, students will be eligible to apply for Stage 2 training in Health Psychology which provides Chartered Health Psychologist status. With an MSc Health Psychology degree they can find employment in health-related fields (eg health promotion, audit, administrative positions in the National Health Service (NHS) or health-related organisations).
