Course Description

Global food security, where the world?s population has access to affordable, safe and nutritious food, is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. This course will give you an understanding of the elements that contribute to the food security agenda. Countries need to balance local and delocalised production with imports and environmental impact. Suppliers need to ensure year-long provision at both low cost and high quality for discerning and needy consumers. Climate change and world population growth put pressure on governments, producers and consumers to plan ahead for food security. The skills and disciplines required to address these issues will be delivered from the natural and social sciences, developing a new generation of innovative thinking. Course Structure The MSc will draw together critical components such as the contribution of climate change, and the role of biodiversity, water, soil, land use, labour, nutrition transition and urbanisation. Students will take a number of core modules and a number of optional modules. There will also be an individual research project, placement or dissertation.
