Course Description

This programme provides a unique blend of theoretical and applied teaching across a range of disciplines, giving you in-depth knowledge of the key environmental issues businesses must address and the skills needed to apply this knowledge in the workplace. The course can be taken full time over 12-18 months or part time over 24-36 months. It is designed both for graduates who wish to pursue a career in environmental management and for those already in employment in the environmental field seeking to develop their expertise at postgraduate level. The course is delivered by specialist staff from across the University and by visiting environmental management experts. Our courses are recognised by the key professional bodies in the environmental management field. Upon successful completion of three designated core modules, you will be eligible to apply for Associate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), giving exemption from the open book examination. All taught modules are accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) for graduate membership. This enables you to progress your career and take a significant step towards becoming a Chartered Environmentalist. Past graduates have found employment in a range of organisations including consultancies, companies in the pharmaceutical and engineering sectors, environmental regulators, local authorities and other public sector bodies. The course approach integrates blended learning, combining face-to-face teaching and tutorials with online learning materials, easy contact with tutors and online submission of coursework. Assessment is primarily by assignments, often directly related to environmental management in the workplace or field. These can include reports, essays, seminars and online tests. Students have access to excellent University facilities including a field station, laboratories and state of the art Learning Resource Centres. All modules are delivered as intensive two or three day short courses, supported by a textbook and online teaching materials. Modules run primarily on Fridays and Saturdays, enabling part time students to attend the University for only six working days a year. These students complete their assignments through making use of our outstanding virtual learning environment Studynet and keeping in remote contact with tutors. Full time students attend tutorials in the weeks following a short course, receiving face-to-face support. For this pathway, the core modules are: Sustainability and Environmental Systems Environmental Policy and Governance Foundation in Environmental Auditing Environmental Management Tools and Methods Management Skills for Environmental Management Research Methods Environmental Management Research Project Students also choose options from: Conservation Management and Practice Corporate Social Responsibility: Transport and Energy Planning Ecology - Systems and Principles Environmental Management Systems Implementation Integrated Waste Pollution Management Water Pollution Control Water Resources Each module can be studied individually as a stand-alone course, please enquire for further details. Entry requirements A degree in environmental science other science, including biology, geography business studies or related disciplines or engineering. Applicants with other qualifications and relevant experience will be considered individually by the Programme Tutor. Accredited Prior Experiential Learning credit may be available for those who have already studied relevant masters level courses, for example individuals who already have Associate membership of IEMA. If English is not your first language, you will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
