Course Description

The MSc Clinical Medicine has been designed to meet the needs of Overseas doctors from a variety of clinical backgrounds and varying seniority from early stages of postgraduate development to those wanting to re-evaluate their career choices. This qualification is for those doctors who want to practice better, differently and more confidently and provides opportunity for those with general post qualification experience or those wishing to change direction to develop their existing knowledge and expertise. The course focuses on clinical management and is based on the principles of good medical practice as defined by the General Medical Council (GMC) http:gmc-ukdoctorsindex.asp. It will improve the ability to solve clinical problems and develop knowledge, skills and attitudes relating to commonly presenting medical conditions and the management of life threatening situations. Clinical teaching will take place in the School?s state of the art simulation facility supported by academics and clinical fellow who have a track record and expertise in simulation education. Students will be given opportunity for direct observation of patient management in clinical practice to consolidate their existing clinical expertise. Holders of this qualification will: ? Develop a systematic understanding and critical awareness ofand new insights into safe and effective medical practice. ? Demonstrate the ability to deal creatively with complex clinical issues, make sound professional judgements and show originality in tackling and solving problems. ? Critically evaluate personal strengths and limitations to develop a realistic career plan that will support long term career ambitions. Who should attend? The need for knowledgeable, skilled and innovative doctors is recognised by health services across the world and it is widely agreed that many senior roles are best supported by masters graduates with a qualification in advancing clinical practice. You will therefore typically aspire to senior and influential roles. This qualification is well suited to those with a vision for the future of healthcare and who wish to influence and lead others. This postgraduate qualification offers good preparation for those wanting to sit the GMC Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam in order to apply for registration to practice in the UK. Overseas students will not require General Medical Council registration to study the MSc Clinical Medicine as they will not be employed in a medical capacity and will have student status whilst studying this masters degree. Structure The MSc Clinical Medicine has an emphasis on the development of practical skills and provides flexibility to choose from a wide range of optional courses (modules) so that various topics can be combined to shape your studies in the direction you want. Modules build up to complete a negotiated programme of study to lead to one of the following: ? MSc Clinical Medicine (typically 1 year full time) ? Postgraduate Diploma Clinical Medicine (typically 8 months) ? Postgraduate Certificate Clinical Medicine (typically 4 months) Modules Compulsory Modules ? Healthcare Disciplines Project Optional Modules You will choose three optional Modules to complete a programme of study that reflect your professional interests Modules include: ?
