Course Description

This is a new route on the MSc Biomedical Science programme that allows you to focus your studies on exercise and health. It has been developed in response to new prevention and treatment regimes being developed in the fight against major cardiovascular, metabolic and neuromusculoskeletal disorders using exercise physiology. The skeletal muscle and exercise physiology units provide a study route that addresses fundamental and current issues of muscle and exercise physiology in healthcare science applications. You will be introduced to the structure and function of skeletal muscle and the molecular, cellular and biochemical regulators of muscle growth and metabolism that are essential for the understanding of development, atrophy and regeneration in health and disease. You will have the option of studying applications of exercise physiology in the prevention and treatment of some major cardiovascular, metabolic and neuro-musculoskeletal diseases and disorders or the molecular mechanisms for the regulation of muscle function and the molecular nature of the most common neuromuscular disorders. These, in combination with the core units, will allow you to develop both generic and professional skills and knowledge required for the clinical applications of muscle and exercise physiology. A major research project completes the MSc. Special features ?The MSc is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). It is of use in obtaining membership at higher grades of the Institute of Biomedical Science, including Chartered Scientist. ?Our biomedical research is amongst the top twelve in the UK. In the recent national Research Assessment Exercise biomedical science research was rated highly with some of our research rated as world leading. ?The School of Healthcare Science offers excellent facilities including the purpose-built laboratories of the Institute for Biomedical Research into Human Movement and Health (IRM).
