Introduction Analytical Bioscience investigates the development and application of advanced analytical techniques in the area of biomedical sciences. This course will provide a training in the methodological aspects of biology, which are important in many areas of drug discovery and design such as treatment for cancer and inherited disorders. It investigate the interactions between potentially harmful chemicals and living organisms at the molecular and cellular level. This course also considers the possible sources of error in experimental and instrumental analysis to allow the correct interpretation of experimentally-derived scientific data. It is suitable for recent graduates who did not cover these areas in depth during their degree and for established bioscientists who wish to up-date their knowledge. This course provides graduates with the opportunity to extend their knowledge in the area of analytical bioscience. Key features: * Modular course with eight taught modules plus project. * Emphasis on independent learning. * Assessment predominantly by assignment. The course is designed to train students in the scientific method in relation to the area of analytical bioscience, extend your interest and knowledge in all areas of the subject and provide vocational support. Specific aims include: * To provide a thorough understanding of the basic principles of analysis, including design of sampling programme, pre-treatment, data handling and the instrumentation used in modern analysis. * To help you think critically and make informed choices between proposed analytical techniques, methods and instruments. * To enable you to interpret data. * To teach the principles of quality control and assurance. * To enable you to apply your knowledge to the practical solution of real analytical problems. * To provide familiarity with current analytical literature to enable you to review, select, read and critically discuss the papers most relevant to a particular topic. * To train you in the methods of experimental design and the creation of new methods, novel modifications or combinations of existing methods. * To provide experience of handling and interpreting a wide range of analytical data. * To develop the techniques of communication, including report writing, poster and oral presentation. * To train students in independent study. As most of our students aim to improve their employment prospects the syllabus is closely matched to current industrial needs. We also provide additional assistance in finding employment. Course Structure This is a postgraduate course and it is taught in a different way to an undergraduate course. Considerable emphasis is placed on independent learning and the assessment is mainly by individual assignment. We offer the following modules: * Fundamentals of Analytical Science * Instrumental Methods and the Analysis of solids * Data Treatment and Analysis * Advanced Separation Techniques * Advanced Methods for Organics * Biochemical methods * Forensic Investigation * Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Analysis * Molecular Medicine * Molecular and Cellular Toxicology * Project * Placement and Careers (no credits awarded for these modules) Career Opportunities We have had an average of over 20 graduates a year since 1994 from the MSc Analytical Science courses.
