Course Description

This programme is aimed at well-motivated graduates from an engineering background who wish to specialise in advanced topics in aeronautical engineering. The core elements of the programme are modules in aerodynamics, dynamics and structures, coupled with a significant research project. The MSc is accredited by both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. For students with an accredited first degree this allows them to satisfy the requirements of the educational base for CEng registration. Students study five lecture and tutorial based modules in the first half of the programme. Preparatory work in the research project also begins, with the main Project module in the second half of the programme. in addition the Aircraft Design optional module can also be studied in this second phase. Compulsory Modules: Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering Computational and Communication Skills Project Preparation and Design Project Optional Modules (select four): Advanced Reliability, Availability and Maintainability Aerospace Structures Aircraft Design Computational Aerodynamics Experimental Fluid Mechanics Flight Dynamics and Control Structural Vibration Turbulence and Turbulence Modelling Programme Features Strong links with industry, such as the Rolls-Royce University Technology centre (UTC) in combustor Aerodynamics, and the opportunity to carry out industrially relevant research projects. Strong research base with research active staff and funded by government and industry. Availability of high quality experimental facilities including an anechoic chamber, six-axis flight simulator, high speed jet rig, laser flow instrumentation. Access to state of the art computer hardware and software including Unigraphics, Fluent, PATRANNASTRAN and Matlab.
