Course Description

This programme is aimed at engineering, mathematics or physical science graduates who wish to specialise in themes in Advanced Mechanical Engineering Science or to support their continual professional development. It aims to provide a sound understanding of the fundamental science, methods, analysis and engineering applications appropriate to this discipline. A research project is completed during the second semester and submitted by September. A list of research projects is produced each year based on staff research interests, but may also involve collaboration with external industrial organisations. Compulsory modules include: Introduction to Advanced Mechanical Engineering Science, Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Mechanics of Biological Materials, Human Factors in Engineering, Computer Methods for Orthopaedic Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Biological Flows. Typical options include modules in: Materials in Transport, Failure of Materials, Surface Engineering, Composite Engineering, Design Search and Optimisation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Engineering Management Studies, Advanced Computational Methods in Engineering, Theory of Elasticity, Application of CFD, Biological Inspired Robots, Instrumentation, Acoustics and Noise Control, Cryogenics and Superconductivity, Automotive Propulsion, Marine Propulsion Engineering, Fuel Cells and PV Systems, Biological Inspired Robots, Micro Systems Technology and Advanced Electrical Materials. Scholarships are available.
