Course Description

Content: Introduction to microprocessors, and programmable logic controllers. Construction and use of different types of memories e.g. RAM, ROM, Magnetic, Semiconductor. Interfacing Input and Output devices to microprocessor systems: Analogue and Digital Conversion. Computer numbering systems. Principles of fault finding. Control Systems involving 'Open' and 'Closed' Loop. Practical exercises using microprocessor based equipment. Objectives: On completion of the course participants will be able to: ? describe the basic structure of a microprocessor and its bus system ? recognise types of memory and storage mediums used in a microprocessor system ? use a Logic Analyser to make measurements on a micro processor system ? describe the basic operation of an 8085 micro- processor system ? use an RS232 lead to interface with peripherals ? carry out fault finding on an 8085 based micro processor system Prerequisites: Electronic Module 3 or a sound knowledge of digital electronics.
