Course outline What is the course about? You will learn how to focus your awareness, cultivate calmness and develop non-judgemental acceptance through a range of meditation practices. This course can help you apply speech techniques more effectively and facilitate your work on avoidance reduction. What topics will we cover? What mindfulness meditation is The relevance of mindfulness work to stammering Developing awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviour How to become more focussed Identifying different mind states A variety of meditation practices including breathing spaces Pleasant and unpleasant events calendar The relationship of mindfulness meditation to cognitive therapy The importance and helpfulness of acceptance Setting up an ongoing practice schedule. By the end of this course you should be able to: By the end of the course you should be able to: Identify the relevance of mindfulness work to stammering Identify key personal mind states and understand how these might help or hinder you Apply a variety of meditation practices on a daily basis Have a greater acceptance of aspects of your experience, including stammering. What level is the course and do I need any particular skills? This course is for people who stammer. No previous knowledge is necessary although it would be helpful for students to have had some previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to: - Express your opinions and feelings - Follow discussions and make relevant contributions - Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class? You will be taught by two experienced specialist stammering therapists. One of the tutors stammers herself. Both tutors have established mindfulness meditation practices and one is currently studying for an MA in mindfulness based approaches. This will be a highly experiential course. Each week you will participate in meditation practices led by the tutors. Home practice is an integral and essential part of the course. You need to set aside 45 minutes per day for this and will need to purchase 3 CDs to guide this home practice (cost included in the course fee.). There will be some tutor input on theory and discussion on the relevance to stammering. Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring? None. The cost of 3 CDs essential for the course is included in the course fee. Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol? Yes. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course.
