MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION MBA 12 months full-time Pg Dip 9 months full-time Pg Cert 6 months full-time AIMS The University of Aberdeen MBA is a one year full-time management programme which covers all the main disciplines of business management whilst enabling students to take more specialised study pathways in their final selection of elective modules. In drawing upon the international expertise of staff in the Business School, the programme aims to promote the development of cross-disciplinary business management knowledge in preparing students for effective management careers in both the private and public sectors. Students on our MBA programmes gain automatic membership of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). As a member you will gain continuing advantage from unlimited free access to the Management Information Centre, Europe's most comprehensive management resource. You also have the opportunity to benefit from local branch activities, networking opportunities and participation in online discussion groups. SYLLABUS The programme is based on core and elective modules plus a critical studies paper. FIRST SEMESTER BUSINESS ETHICS - This new course explores the nature of business ethics, including the social role of corporations, ethical theory, ethical decision-making and business ethics management, before also considering how in practice the concepts and tools apply to each of a corporation's major stakeholders. MACROECONOMICS FOR BUSINESS ? An introduction to the key concepts of macroeconomics relevant to international business including analysis of money and foreign exchange markets, labour market issues, unemployment, inflation and economic growth. BUSINESS ECONOMICS AND FINANCE - How businesses interface and interact with investors in financial markets. BUSINESS DECISION-MAKING - Modelling decision making, decision making processes and optimisation. SECOND SEMESTER STRATEGIC MARKETING - Marketing management and strategic planning. Marketing in a range of organisational settings, including consumer, industrial, service and voluntary sectors. Systems perspective on key marketing techniques. Relationship between marketing and other management functions in modern organisations. MANAGING PEOPLE AT WORK - Management of people as a key element for organisational success. People as the most complex of all organisational resources to manage. Theoretical and practical issues of people management in the contemporary competitive economic environment. RESEARCH FOR BUSINESS - Learning organisations, the knowledge society, knowledge management, managers as researchers, research design and methods. SUMMER SCHOOL Students are required to complete 4 elective modules and complete a critical studies paper. Up to 10 electives are run each year and examples of the type of postgraduate electives offered by the Business School are: Managing CreativityStrategic Human Resource ManagementInterpersonal SkillsLearning Theory and the Integrated OrganisationInternational Business People and ChangeLeadership and Communication. The CRITICAL STUDIES paper allows students to bring together many of the skills developed in other areas of the programme and to explore a topic of interest in some depth. . ASSESSMENT Most modules are assessed by examination and coursework. Research for Business and the Critical Studies paper is 100% coursework assessed. CASS Graduate School 2007
