Mathematics -Functional Skills What is Mathematics - Functional Skills? This course will help students who wish to gain confidence in maths and achieve a qualification that is recognised by employers and higher education. The course links some maths topics to content studied on other courses such as sport, engineering, business and health and social care. It covers the kind of number work and problem solving skills required by most employers and by BTEC courses at Foundation and Intermediate levels. Is Mathematics - Functional Skills suitable for me? Students enjoy the confidence that they gain from improving their ability to deal with numbers and using methods that are relevant to adult life and their choice of employment. How will I learn? This course follows the National Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum and the new Functional Skills specification: Number (real world calculations, fractions and percentages) Measures, Shape and Space (includes common measures of money, time, temperature, distance, length, weight, capacity, perimeter, area and volume, and shape and position) Handling Data (includes data and statistical measures and probability) The course will leave you feeling more confident in your ability to deal with money and measurements. How will I be assessed? Some assessment is done in class, some using tests and some online. Progression Some students go on to do GCSE Mathematics in the following year. Students also feel more numerically confident at the end of the course. This helps them to cope better in employment and in their personal life. Lucy turned down a job at her local shop because she was worried about handling money and giving people the wrong change. Her parents say her confidence has greatly improved and she has now taken on a part-time job involving money. Course costs All students will be expected to provide their own textbooks, stationery, computer disks and calculators (where appropriate). Costs are outlined below: Essential: calculator ?6 approx. If the cost of equipment, materials and trips may cause you financial hardship, there is the opportunity to apply for help from the College Access Fund.
