Mathematics - Further GCE A Level Qualification: 2 year course Course type: Level 3 (advanced) Entry requirements: 4 x GCSE B grades An A or an A* in GCSE Maths. Head of Department: Mrs Michelle Sanderson Course assessment: All units are assessed by a 1 hour 30 minutes written examination C1 and S1 are taken in January and C2-4 and M1 are taken in June (first year) The remaining units (3 for AS, 6 for 'A' level) are taken in January and June of year 2 There is no coursework What can this course offer me? An exceptional pass rate and A/B rate over many years A Mathematical education which will leave you well placed to tackle any Mathematics, Science or Engineering course in the country Many students gaining places at Oxford, Cambridge, London and Warwick for Maths, Physics and Engineering in recent years Staff members who are well experienced at teaching Further Maths What will I learn? You will complete the whole AS/A2 Mathematics course in the first year; covering C1-4, M1 and S1 (see 'Mathematics' pages) In year 2, you can choose 3 more units (AS Further) or 6 more units ('A' Further) from a wide variety of options, giving you the opportunity to study 'university style' topics in Pure mathematics, such as Differential Equations, Matrices and Imaginary Numbers as well as extending your knowledge of Mechanics and/or Statistics or doing some Decision Maths What Makes a good Mathematics - Further student? You really enjoy Mathematics and look forward to spending 9 hours a week being challenged. You feel very confident with using Algebra and are prepared for learning your Maths at a fast pace. Which other courses link well with this subject? This course can be taken along with any other subject combination. Future Opportunities This course will prepare you for Mathematics degree courses at any institution in the country It will give you the background Mathematics for the most competitive Science and Engineering degrees.
