#### Course Description

Mathematics (Use of) AS AS Use of Maths is fundamentally a practical course. It is designed to make use of mathematical skills in a practical context so, for example, algebra skills are taught using real world examples. This course is designed for students who want to use Maths to support their other subjects such as Geography, Psychology, Sociology and Business Studies. Lessons will take place in a computer room, and you will spend a lot of your time working with Excel and producing reports in Word. You do not need to have any previous ICT skills as you will acquire them during the course. You will also make extensive use of graphical calculators, which you are allowed to use in the examination. These are available to purchase from the college shop. Although the algebra in Use of Maths would complement your studies in Chemistry or Biology, please note that you need to have achieved a Grade B in GCSE Mathematics to follow these two courses. In addition, Use of Maths is currently available at Long Road at AS level only. AS Course Content 1. Algebra and Graphs This module focuses on using Pure Maths to model real world situations. There is a theoretical aspect, but the emphasis is on intelligent trial-and-error to create models which match real world data. You will study different types of graphs, including trigonometric functions; polynomials; exponentials and logarithms. 2. Decision Maths In this module you will solve real-world problems by modelling them using networks. You will tackle two areas: travel problems, such as finding the shortest path between two points, and project management, where you will use Critical Path Analysis to find the minimum time needed to complete a project. Each of these first two modules is a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification. You will receive a separate certificate for each of them, showing that you have passed a qualification viewed by employers and universities as being worth one third of a full AS course. 3. Use of Mathematics This covers the content from all parts of the course. You will be tested on your understanding of the more theoretical topics in algebra, but the emphasis is still on showing how this theoretical knowledge relates to real world problems. Assessment This course is assessed two thirds by examination and one third by coursework. Use of Maths and your future The general mathematical and high-level ICT skills acquired on this course are useful for a wide range of careers and courses.
