Course Description

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Department of Government has steadily consolidated a reputation as the best politics department in the UK and in Europe, with an outstanding record of teaching, research and publication. We gained the highest possible rating in all five UK Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) and, in the latest RAE in December 2008, were judged to be the UK?s best politics department. Our teachers and supervisors are specialists in their fields, sharing a cosmopolitan background and outlook while publishing research that is internationally recognised. We live in an increasingly interconnected and globalised world where events that unfold on the other continents can affect our lives very quickly. Sometimes politicians are able to work together in a search for solutions but disagreement, and even the possibility of conflict, never seems far away. Our most popular course, MAMSc International Relations attracts students from all over the world. We focus on general theoretical perspectives of the discipline, providing the tools for you to understand historical and contemporary events by placing these within an analytical framework. Although we cover a wide variety of theoretical perspectives, the emphasis is on explaining and understanding international events, rather than simply the intellectual history of international relations as a field. You graduate prepared for internationally oriented careers in the public and private sector, or for undertaking your PhD. This course has ESRC Doctoral Training Centre accreditation, meaning it can form part of a 1+3 funding opportunity worth up to ?18,000 for talented postgraduates. The University is one of only 21 ESRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centres in the UK.
