Makaton Communication Workshops Enhancement (18 hours) Start Date: 21 April 2010 Length Of Course: 6 weeks Attendance Days: Wednesday Attendance Times: 6.00pm - 9.00pm Level: Stage 2 Qualification: Certificate Course Code: HD009 C0901 Examining Body: MVDP What is the course about? This course teaches you to use the signs and symbols of the second half of the Makaton Core Vocabulary with people who have communication difficulties. Who is the course for? The course is for professionals who would like a detailed knowledge of Makaton and who would like to develop the communication skills of others. It is also an essential part of the entry criteria for Makaton Regional Tutor training. Am I qualified to join the course? You must have attended the Foundation Workshop (part 1) before you attend the Enhancement workshop (Part 2). What will the course cover? The Enhancement Workshop concentrates on improving and developing participants own signing skills and translation skills using signs and symbols. Signs and symbols from stages 5-8 of the Core Vocabulary are taught while stages 1-4 and the additional vocabulary are revised. Practical sessions are supported by lectures that look in depth at the users needs and how to adapt communication to suit. What will I be able to do as a result of the course? At the end of the Enhancement Workshop you should be able to use the whole of the Makaton Core Vocabulary with children, students and service users. You should be able to analyse a user s signing, communicate at the appropriate level and identify how to support him/her to use Makaton more effectively. You should be able to identify and create opportunities through Makaton for the user to develop his or her communication skills and be better integrated into the community. How will I be taught? There will be whole group teaching of theory, and practical signing groups of no more than 10 people per teacher. All Makaton courses are delivered by Makaton regional trainers who are current practitioners in the field of learning disability. How will I know I am progressing and how is the course assessed? The tutor will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on the Statement of Learning form. You will receive a certificate of participation from the MVDP. Will I have a chance to get my own views across? You will have constant contact with your tutor throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end. What can the course lead to? At the end of the course you will be able to use Makaton signs and symbols to enhance communication with individuals, within a service or organisation and with a range of users. Once you have experience of using Makaton, you will be eligible for the Makaton Local or Regional Tutor s course. How much will it cost? Enhancement Workshop: ? 195 This will include a users manual and pocket book of Makaton signs and symbols (ie 2 books - stages 5-8). There are no fee concessions on this course.
