Course Description

The MA in Textiles & Fashion Product provides a creative environment that encourages students to challenge design and making conventions through materials, investigation, experimentation, and innovation. Students are encouraged to find new ways of merging design and function, particularly in the context of textiles and fashion product. Workshops and studios are housed in a spacious, purpose built complex, with an excellent range of both traditional and digital equipment. This unique environment enables students to explore new and traditional craft based skills and technologies, allowing fibre, yarn and cloth based processes to be informed by other disciplines. These can include ceramics and glass, wood, metal, jewellery and silversmithing, as well as digital areas such as video, animation, interactive design and audio sound cape. Alternatively, students can pursue a more singular approach, with an in-depth focus upon traditional approaches to textiles and fashion product design. While supporting students? creative and professional ambitions, we also encourage the consideration of current design concerns such as intelligent materials, renewables, sustainability and post-consumption as well as ecological and environmentally sound production processes. Students can study on either a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time study encourages a focused approach to new product development in a professional context, whilst part-time study recognises practising designers with time constraints but the desire to join a vibrant and flourishing MA community.
