Course Description

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies is internationally recognised as one of the leading centres for work that focuses on the role of the unconscious mind in mental health, as well as in culture and society generally. Our research and teaching is deeply grounded in knowledge deriving from clinical practice, to which our highest standards of academic thinking are then applied. We enjoy an outstanding reputation for research and have consistently achieved the highest rating in the UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), most recently in December 2008. We offer this innovative course jointly with the Tavistock Clinic. MA Refugee Care introduces you to a therapeutic dimension and psychosocial perspective for work with asylum seekersrefugees. We equip you to be reflective and pro-active, thus making you more effective therapeutically in whatever role you have in this field (eg management, education, law, social work, psychology, psychotherapy or community work). We encourage suitably qualified candidates to study our PhD Refugee Care, which requires you to successfully complete modules for our MA (without the dissertation) and submit an acceptable research proposal, then proceed to thesis research with the aim of completing in the normal minimum period of PhD study (in this case, normally an additional two years full-time or four years part-time).
