Course Description

The programme gives you a thorough understanding of the principles of phonetics as an important part of the study of spoken language. After studying how the human vocal tract produces different kinds of speech sounds, the programme focuses on instrumental methods of investigating speech and the relationship between auditory and instrumental analysis of speech. You will also learn basic principles of phonological, morphological and syntactic analysis, which will allow you to situate phonetics in the wider field of linguistics and explore how sound patterns relate to various levels of linguistic organisation. Browse our website (www.leeds.ac.uklinguistics) for more information.
