Course Description

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Department of Language and Linguistics is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the world, rated as producing the highest proportion of ?world-leading? linguistics research of any university in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). Comprising 24 academic staff, we offer teaching and research supervision in: language acquisition, language learning and language teaching culture and communication psycholinguistics language disorders sociolinguistics and theoretical and descriptive linguistics. This course provides you with a formal and empirical grounding in all core areas of linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. We review and evaluate the major theoretical approaches in these disciplines. Our optional modules are in the related fields of descriptive linguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics and computational linguistics.
