Course Description

AIMS The aim of this programme is to develop your understanding of the Latin American region from the perspectives of history, politics, society, culture, environmental politics and development studies. It also provides you with the opportunity to develop your language skills in Spanish, Portuguese or the Quechua language. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION You take compulsory modules (60 credits) that cover: the shaping of Latin America ? social and political themes the shaping of Latin America ? cultural and historical perspectives research methods for Latin American interdisciplinary studies critical practice for postgraduate studies. You also take 60 credits of optional modules. Your choices are influenced by the level of language skills you have when you join the programme. If you have language skills in Spanish or Portuguese, up to A level standard or equivalent, you may choose from a selection of subject-based modules or language-based modules up to a total of 20 credits. If you do not have these language skills, you must choose 40 credits of Spanish or Portuguese modules and another 20-credit optional module. Optional modules (20 credits each) typically include: intellectual and political thought in Brazil and Hispano-America politics of development and social struggle the ?Indian? problem in Latin America ? a historical view gender, social movements and development in Latin America narratives of cultural identity multilingualism and society gender and sexuality in Latin American film Spanish general language I and II Portuguese language I and II Quechua language (available to students with Spanish or Portuguese language skills only).
