Course Description

Course aims: The MA TESOL is designed to provide a thorough grounding in both theory and practice of language teaching to those students with little or no previous experience of teaching English. The programme will provide you with: ? The basic practical skills needed to enter a language classroom with confidence and facilitate the development of learner fluency and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and control over linguistic form: grammar, vocabulary and phonology ? The opportunity to develop an understanding of professional issues relating to language teaching and learning ? A body of knowledge that will enable you to undertake language teaching at a range of levels and in different cultural and institutional contexts ? The ability to reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate language teaching, learning concepts and theories, and understand and examine the assumptions underlying different classroom practices ? The skills and ability to undertake effective small-scale practitioner research in your specific area of interest. Course modules: ? Language teaching in action: principles and practice ? Second Language Teaching and Learning ? Description of English ? Options ? Professional EnquiryProject in TESOL Teaching and assessment methods: On campus teaching is seminar-based, with tutorial support. Students are encouraged to develop their transferable skills and IT and oral presentation are often used.
