The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Department of Language and Linguistics is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the world, rated as producing the highest proportion of ?world-leading? linguistics research of any university in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). Comprising 24 academic staff, we offer teaching and research supervision in: language acquisition, language learning and language teaching culture and communication psycholinguistics language disorders sociolinguistics and theoretical and descriptive linguistics. On our MA English for Specific Purposes, you will focus on the teaching, learning and use of English for academic and occupational purposes. English is now the most widely used language for international communication in the areas of business, science, medicine and education, and consequently many ELTEFLTESOL teachers are required to teach adults either preparing for university study through the medium of English or using English for work-related purposes. We target key topics in this area like teaching EAP, teaching ESP, needs analysis, materials design and evaluation, genre analysis, and academic writing.
