Course Description

This is an innovative and exciting course for those wishing to explore contemporary issues about young children and their learning from birth to the age of eight. The increasing demand for well-qualified professionals makes the course a highly desirable advanced qualification for those working or intending to work with young children in schools, children?s centres and nurseries in the state, private and voluntary sectors. The MA Early Years puts children?s learning, culture and identity at its heart and supports the development of practice from these perspectives. The structure and content of the course means that it is relevant to a range of contexts and professional situations for UK and international students. You will study four core modules: personal professional reflective practice, research methods, ethical dilemmas: children, families and practitioners, and current issues in early years. There is a choice of two electives from a choice of 16 modules covering a wide range of areas. The major independent study enables students to research a particular area of interest of professional relevance. Assessment is through academic study which includes essays, presentations and portfolios. The teaching team is drawn from the Childhood and Early Years subject group, who share contemporary theory, knowledge and research interests with students. Entry requirements Applicants may hold a teaching degree or a first degree in, for example, Childhood Studies, Education Studies, Playwork or Psychology. Applicants need a genuine interest in young children and their education and must be able to demonstrate the ability to sucessfully complete the award.
