Course Description

Course Overview: The course is oriented toward the creation of well-rounded digital effects artists for the feature film effects industry. The skills and experience gained can equally be applied to the production of effects for television commercials, music promos and television series. The aim of the MA Digital Effects course is to produce graduates with the range and depth of skills necessary to be future visual effects designers or digital effects supervisors. The principle practical aspects of the course are Compositing, which covers 2D image manipulation and combination, and 3D Computer Animation, which covers the production of digital imagery for compositing with live action sequences. Supporting these principle aspects are acquisition, which covers shooting live action sequences on film and video to be composited into effects projects, and scripting for animation systems. As well as hands-on skills the students will develop general skills in digital effects sequence design, production planning and scheduling, team-working and problem solving. The academic aspects provide a strong theoretical underpining for the principle areas of study, including lecture series on film-making techniques, principles of computer graphics, the fusion of art and technology, and personal research projects. MA Digital Effects normally takes students from art, design or media backgrounds. Students come from a broad range of areas including fine art, photography, architecture, fashion design, film-making and graphic design. Knowledge of computer graphics is not a pre-requisite for entry onto the programme. Traditional art skills are highly beneficial. This is an international programme which attracts students from all over the world. Students from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds give the programme a strong interdisciplinary, international feel.
