Course Description

Packaging design deals with ? marketing and brand identity ? big volume and low cost production ? environmental impact ? information design ? 3D design. This discipline needs people who are not only highly creative but who can also address technological, economic and social issues. Packaging is a huge worldwide industry and there are excellent job opportunities for talented people. Whether you are a graduate or practising designer, this course encourages you to meet the challenge of exploring new directions and shaping the future of packaging design. We expect you to examine how changes in society, social attitudes, technology, politics and legislation can affect your role as a designer. You can choose your own balance of taught and project-based study. Project work can account for between 60?85 per cent of the course. Individual project work includes research and creative work exploring your study topic. This is supported by lecture and seminars dealing with professional practice issues and reviewing progress. You also take part in regular group and individual tutorials. Your MA project is the culmination of your research and studio-based design practice. This project demonstrates that you can deal with difficult contemporary questions and take a leading role in your profession as a designer. You regularly take part in constructive critical debate about your own work and that of your peers. You need to communicate your research, ideas and designs in ways that are appropriate to professional leadership. We are one of the few universities that specialise in this subject. We provide a comprehensive package of postgraduate study, research and industrial consultancy, as well as an established undergraduate programme. This course is built on internationally-recognised research by members of our staff team. We have strong industrial contacts in packaging design and we encourage you to work with external companies when completing your project work. If you have no previous experience of packaging design, we offer an introductory course dealing with industry issues. It also enables you to complete some short guided projects to build up your subject knowledge. Industrial sponsorship Sometimes we are able to obtain sponsorship from an industrial company. Usually this is linked to a particular design problem that the company would like to investigate. We are normally asked to shortlist applicants before recommending a small number to apply. If this happens, we consider your interview, portfolio of work, academic qualifications and learning aims. We aim to pick people whose abilities and aims are relevant for the company and who are most likely to be successful in a competitive interview. There are very few packaging design courses in the UK and ours is the only MA course in this subject.
