Course Description

This course is ideal if you are a graduate in graphic, industrial or packaging design. You develop your design skills and learn how to take a lead role in the international graphics industry. You complete a major research-based project under the supervision of our teaching team who are actively involved in high level graphic design research and practice. We place emphasis on personal research and developing your own interests and ideas in a challenging and supportive environment. You can focus on areas including ? advertising ? animation ? branding and identity ? illustration ? packaging ? screen based media ? typography. You can choose your own balance of taught and project-based study. Project work can make up between 60?85 per cent of the course and includes research and creative work exploring your study topic. This is supported by lectures and seminars dealing with professional practice issues and reviewing your progress. You also take part in regular group and individual tutorials. Your MA project is the culmination of your research and studio-based design practice. The project demonstrates that you can deal with difficult contemporary questions and take a leading role as a design professional. During the course you regularly take part in constructive critical debates about your work and that of your peers. You need to communicate your research, ideas and designs in ways that are appropriate to professional leadership. When studying for the MA, you can work alongside our packaging design consultancy the Packaging Partnership and with researchers from other design areas. We also have contacts with leading brand companies and design organisations such as WPA Pinfold and Future Brand and encourage you to work collaboratively with them. In previous years, we have worked with major commercial brands such as Marks & Spencer, Thorntons and Seeds of Change. Sheffield is home to the largest concentration of creative production in Yorkshire and Humberside. Support for creative industries in the city has encouraged a talent base from home grown talent as well as practitioners relocating here. The course has strong links with the creative community in Sheffield, including Designers Republic, Universal Everything, Tado and the internationally renowned digital arts festival Lovebytes. Industrial sponsorship Sometimes we are able to obtain sponsorship from an industrial company. Usually this is linked to a particular design problem that the company would like to investigate. We are normally asked to shortlist applicants before recommending a small number to apply. If this happens, we consider your interview, portfolio of work, academic qualifications and learning aims. We aim to pick those whose abilities and aims are relevant for the company and who are most likely to be successful in a competitive interview.
