Course Description

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Department of Language and Linguistics is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the world, rated as producing the highest proportion of ?world-leading? linguistics research of any university in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). Comprising 24 academic staff, we offer teaching and research supervision in: language acquisition, language learning and language teaching culture and communication psycholinguistics language disorders sociolinguistics and theoretical and descriptive linguistics. If you wish to become a CALL specialist in an ELTEFLTESOL work environment, then our course provides you with the theoretical foundations for CALL as an area of applied linguistics for language teaching, including practical experience of locating and evaluating existing CALL resources and using basic tools, plus experience in the creation of CALL tasks and materials. To prepare you for possible research in CALL, we also engage in a critical discussion of current research and how to conduct empirical investigations.
