Course Description

This unique and innovative course is offered by the newly-established Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), involving the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham. A full time, two-year course, it will include intensive Arabic language learning, partly taking place at the Arab Academy in Cairo, Egypt (from April until the end of August in the first year of the course), in addition to topics such as modern Islamic text, modern Arabic literature, the Arab cultural renaissance, the politics of gender in the Arab world, contemporary Arab thought, Islamic religious texts and Islamic legal texts. The MA course will consist of 320 credits in total (240 of which will be at Master's level) 140 credits will be delivered by the University of Edinburgh in year 1, and 180 credits will be delivered by the University of Manchester in year 2.
