Course Description

The law governing research, development and production within the oil and gas industry has seen an increase in importance and complexity over the years reflecting the need for these to be fully understood and incorporated into the decision-making process. The renewable energy field is also gathering pace and as both the technology and the law relevant to these develops, it will inevitably pose challenges for the industry in terms of legal abilities with a demand for lawyers and legal practitioners specialising in this emerging and important area of the industry. This course develops both practical skills and academic knowledge and provides a broad understanding of the diverse range of legal issues which confront the energy industry today. The content has been designed to meet both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Energy Institute?s (EI) training guidelines and accreditation requirements providing the opportunity to critically assess and examine key legal issues in the oil and gas sector both within the UK and in other leading jurisdictions. This has enabled us to create content which appropriately spans both industries to provide a dynamic specialist course. You will be taught via our online virtual learning environment (Campus Moodle) allowing you to interact effectively with lecturers and colleagues alongside accessing a wide variety of online resources. Course materials are uploaded for you to read and later discuss with lecturers. In some modules you may be working on both small group-based activities as well as individual assignments. Interactivity is a key component in this course and has been specifically designed with the busy professional in mind. As has been the case in the past, you may create informal working groups with your peers. The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, online activity work, practical work, student-centred learning and private study.
