Course Description

The economic and social landscape of modern Europe has been shaped by European Law. You will be studying the underlying rules, principles, and policies of a legal system which is still evolving. European Law has an enormous and far-reaching impact, not only on domestic legal systems, but on all aspects of European life, making an LLM in European Law exciting, important and relevant. The LLM European Law provides the opportunity for in-depth study of key aspects of European Union law. Students choose up to four of the following specialist European Law options offered by Birmingham Law School and write a dissertation on an aspect of European law. They can choose one of their four modules from those available on the General LLM programme and one from those offered by the European Research Institute and Department of Political Science and International Studies. This provides an exciting opportunity to combine study of European law with a subject in a related discipline. In Part I you take 3 or 4 of the following modules: Commercial Conflict of Laws EU and WTO Public Procurement Law EU Competition Law European Human Rights Law EU Constitutional Law Health Law and the European Union (New!) Law of the Internal Market To give added flexibility, you may instead take 2 specialist European law options, one of the ERI modules, and any of the modules on the general LLM programme as your 4th choice. In Part II of the programme, you write a 15,000-word dissertation on an approved topic of European law.
