Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) Level 1: Award in Vehicle Service and Repair This course is designed for new entrants to the industry who require a basic understanding of vehicle servicing and repair to allow them to either progress to higher level courses or to enter the industry as a Modern Apprentice. It is held over a minimum of three days per week. The course has a high practical content and students are able to achieve other relevant qualifications during the year. Topics covered Working safely and effectively during light vehicle maintenance and repair. Foundation skills for light vehicle maintenance and repair. Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance. Operating principles of light vehicle tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems. Operating principles of light vehicle engines. Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems. Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle electrical and electronic systems. Preferred entry requirements Students can be accepted directly after leaving school. No formal entry qualifications are required. However evidence of a sound, basic education and enthusiasm for motor vehicles will be sought at interview. Additional skills and qualifications When your learning agreement is discussed with your tutor early in the first term, you will be advised of extra skills and qualifications which are built into the course programme known as secondary learning goals. These secondary learning goals are selected on the basis of their importance to the industry/career in which you are interested. They will contribute to your employability and will enhance your CV. Employment and career prospects Fast fit service engineer/technician/valeter. However, it is likely that further qualifications would be required to achieve qualified status within the industry.
