Course Description

The Institute for Applied Language Studies (IALS) is a centre for language teaching and for research and development relating to language teaching. IALS staff has produced a wide range of published teaching materials as well as numerous books and articles about the teaching and learning of languages. IALS staff has supervised approximately 20 PhD students who have successfully completed their studies in the last ten years, and are currently supervising 12. Facilities and Resources The Institute offers facilities for computer assisted learning, as well as a self-access study centre and language teaching library. In addition to MSc and PhD research programmes, visiting scholars can pursue their research and development projects at the Institute on attachments of 2 to 10 weeks. Generic Training - Critical knowledge and understanding of the relevant research literature within the areas of language teaching, language learning and or language in education (or other areas of professional use) - Ability to evaluate existing research, to formulate research plans, and to undertake research activities, using an appropriate choice of qualitative and quantitive methods - Ability to write up research effectively and to present accounts of research outcomes at professional conferences Career Prospects - Language teaching and language teaching management in both state and private sections - Language teacher education - Teaching research positions in university language centres and institutes and departments of applied linguistics and in language related areas of other academic fields such as business, communication, and marketing - Course book and materials writing The Learning Process You will be given the research training necessary to undertake your studies and have two supervisors who will discuss your work and provide guidance. You may take a number of taught courses. You will share your research with others at the annual PPLS postgraduate conference professional conferences.
