ICT: Applied Single (A Level) Cheadle only FURTHER MATHEMATICS AS and A Level (Edexcel) Campus: Marple (14/07/09) Course overview Further Maths is like Maths except that there is more of it and it is more challenging. The course develops and extends the topics covered in the Maths A level. Further Maths students study for the Maths A level in their first year and Further Maths As and A levels in their second year. If you decide to take the AS level in Further Maths you will do 3 extra units. If you study for the full A level in Further Maths you will do an extra 6 units. AS Level If you study Further Maths to AS Level you will take 3 of the following six units. You must take unit one but you can choose your other two from any of the remaining five units. Unit One You will study a range of pure maths topics such as Series, Complex Numbers, Coordinate Systems, Matrix Algebra and Proof. Unit Two You will study a range of pure maths topics such as Inequalities, Series, Complex Numbers, Differential Equations and Maclaurin and Taylor Series. Unit Three You will study a range of pure maths topics such as Vectors, Hyperbolic Functions, Coordinate Systems, Matrix Algebra and Calculus. Unit Four You will study a range of decision maths topics such as Algorithms, Route Inspection, Critical Path Analysis, Linear Programming and Matchings. It will be a completely new type of mathematics that you will not have come across before. Unit Five You will study a range of mechanics topics such as Projectiles, Calculus, Centres Of Mass, Work, Energy and Power, Collisions and Statics. Unit Six You will study a range of statistics topics such as Binomial and Poisson Distributions, Continuous Random Variables, Sampling and Hypothesis Testing. A Level If you study to A Level you will take all of the six units outlined above. How you will learn Lessons are usually teacher led and could involve investigation, discussion, group work and working on examples. You will use text books for each module which is sometimes supplemented by extra worksheets. Scientific and graphical calculators are used extensively throughout the course. How you will be assessed Each unit is assessed by a 90 minute exam and your final grade is based on the total mark. There is no coursework. Special entry requirements You will need at least a grade A at GCSE Maths. What students say Further Maths is very useful for other subjects, especially Physics.
