Course Description

IB Biology Why study Biology? Biology is the study of living organisms. This course undertakes study at a variety of levels from the molecular to that of the biosphere. At the end of the course you will have an appreciation of: specific techniques used in biology, how the heart rate and breathing are controlled, genetic engineering, colour change in urine, how sugar levels in the body are controlled. What will I learn? Subject specific core includes: Cells Homeostasis Nerves and Muscles Biochemistry Immunity Excretion Genetics Reproduction Plant Science Ecology In addition options are available in: Cells and Energy Ecology and Conservation Further Human Physiology How will I learn? Practical work and investigations are an important and integral part of both courses. You will also undertake a group project. What will I be able to do next? An International Baccalaureate qualification in Biology is rated highly by all universities ?? including Oxbridge and the medical schools. A good grade will help you to secure a place to study almost any subject at any university, either in the UK or abroad. What will it cost? The College will provide a Lab coat and safety spectacles. All students will be expected to provide their own textbooks, stationery and calculators (where appropriate). Essential ?30.00 for textbook; ?20.00 for Ecology trip Non-essential ?13.00 subscription to Biology Science Review How will I be assessed? External assessment takes place at the end of the two-year course. There are 3 written papers including a multiple-choice test which accounts for 76% of the total marks. Coursework, which accounts for 24% of the marks, is assessed by your lecturer and moderated externally.
