Qualification Name: GCE A2 Level Biology And Human Biology A Course Name: Human Biology - A Level Course Code: BMLH Centre: Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS) Applies to: School Leavers and International Students Availability: Full Time (Various times - TBA) Who is this course for? In partnership with the College of North West London, these courses are delivered at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies. This course is for you if you are interested in Human Biology or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses. What are the entry requirements? You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in Biology) and AS Level in Human Biology obtained in 2008/2009. Please note that AS Biology will not be acceptable. After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities. Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2 Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2 Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data. What qualification will I receive? GCE A Level in Human Biology. Where can it lead? This course can lead to progression in studying Human Biology in Higher Education. It will also count towards your UCAS points. This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields. What will I study? You will study the subject as follows: Unit 1 - Bodies and Cells In and Out of Control 1. New genes for old 2. Drugs can affect how we perceive the world around us 3. IVF 4. Growing up, growing old, passing on your genes 5. The management structure of cells 6. Muscles, hormones and nerves 7. Diabetes and hypothermia - homeostasis. Unit 2 - The Air We Breathe, The Water We Drink, The Food We Eat 1. People change communities 2. Human health affected when they change their environment 3. Human activities can damage ecosystems and create new ones 4. Plants can reduce the impact of fossil fuels on climate change 5. Human impacts on evolution 6. People and their micro-organisms. Unit 3: Centre assessed unit - Practical skills a. Selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods b. Working methodically and safely, demonstrating competence in the required manipulative skills and efficiency in managing time c. Analysing collected data using an appropriate statistical test to explain these conclusions d. Identifying limitations of materials, apparatus and procedures and suggesting modifications to overcome them. How will I be taught?
