Course Description

This unique course, studied by distance learning, is intended for students who are employed or who are about to be employed in the broader aspects of the horseracing industry. Warwickshire College, in collaboration with the British Racing School (BRS), has designed a specialist programme that covers racehorse care and breeding and the essential aspects of horseracing business management. The course includes some attendance at the BRS at Newmarket for one week intensive sessions, as part of the trainer and assistant trainer provision. The course involves considerable work-based learning. Students who are not employed within the horseracing industry will be required to undertake a minimum of 10 weeks (or equivalent) work experience. Core Modules Include Business Management for Horseracing Equine Anatomy and Physiology Foundations of Business Horseracing Industry Foundations Marketing Foundations Racehorse Care Staff Management Optional Modules Include There are three study routes Racehorse, Breeding and Business. Students may also choose a mixed diet of modules across the study routes. Racehorse Equine Behaviour Feeding Racehourses Foundations of Equitation Prevention and Control of Disease Principles of Training Racecourse Riding to Win Breeding Breeding and Schooling Foundations of Equine Reproduction Stud Management and Breeding for Performance Sward and Estate Management Young Stock Production Business Finance Business Information Systems Customer Care Marketing Management Starting and Growing a Business The course is designed to produce work ready graduates and is therefore an ideal stepping stone into and within the horseracing industry. Future careers can include: racecourse assistant, marketing assistant and other administration and management based positions. On successful completion students will have the option to progress, by distance learning, to complete the BA (Hons) Horseracing Industry (Business, Management and Practice) qualification. This will normally involve a further 1218 months of distance learning study.
