Course Description

Foundation Degree Health Trainers Course Overview Health Trainers are a new workforce - they will work in the community motivating and assisting people to set goals by developing personal health plans, giving practical support to carry out those plans and identifying with individuals their barriers to change. This Lancaster University validated Foundation Degree aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge to carry out this role effectively - it endorses the underpinning principles of the 'Making Healthy Choices' government agenda to encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own health and well-being, tackling issues such as obesity, exercise, smoking and substance misuse. Foundation Degrees are flexible, accessible and work-related, linking theory to practice so that you can understand how what you do in the class-room relates to the working environment. They are predominantly coursework based and allow you to undertake personal development planning for future career success. Once you have successfully completed your Foundation Degree, you are then in a position to access a one year BA (Hons) top up programme. What will I study? During the first year of the programme your modules will introduce you to the concept of 'health' and what this means in society today. You will consider ways of motivating people to change their lifestyles and how to support them when facing hurdles and barriers. Knowing what help and assistance is available to such individuals is an essential part of the role of the Health Trainer and as such, working collaboratively with other agencies is also studied as part of your first year. You will begin the process of Personal Development and will also be introduced to research methods to ensure you are given the underpinning knowledge and skills to be successful on your course. The second year extends your knowledge by looking at the legal aspects of the role of the Health Trainer and how stress in the workplace contributes to unhealthy lifestyles, amongst other issues. You can choose options depending on your personal interest, looking at the psychological side of such a role or perhaps the growing concern over substance misuse.
