Course Description

Programme Summary Health and Social Care services for adults and children are highly regulated. This means you need to have the right qualification if you are working in a hospital, residential home or day care setting. The Health and Social Care NVQ is a nationally recognised and flexible qualification based on industry standards, available at 3 levels and aimed at those who deliver direct health and social care with a focus on the development and maintenance of independence, and hands-on care to support physical and emotional daily living needs. Day to day work tasks will provide opportunities for recognition for candidates and in particular, the programme emphasises the development and enhancement of those practical skills necessary to provide high levels of care for personal and physical care needs and the support of recreational, developmental and therapeutic activities. Programme Content The programme is unit based and candidates must complete eight units in total to successfully complete the qualification. There are four mandatory units and candidates must choose an additional four units from a wide variety of available optional units to reflect their own work experience and organisational needs. Mandatory Units ? Promote effective communication for and about individuals ? Promote monitor and maintain health safety and security in the working environment ? Reflect on and develop your practice ? Promote choice, well being and the protection of all individuals Optional Units ? Contribute to care planning and review ? Contribute to planning, monitoring and reviewing the delivery of service for individuals ? Support individuals to access and use services and facilities ? Support individuals to develop and maintain social networks and relationships ? Support the social, emotional and identity needs of individuals ? Prepare your family and networks to support individuals requiring care ? Provide a home and family environment for individuals ? Contribute to the protection of individuals from harm and abuse ? Contribute to the prevention and management of abusive and aggressive behaviour ? Provide frameworks to help individuals to manage challenging behaviour ? Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise needs ? Support individuals to live at home ? Support individuals to manage their financial affairs ? Recognise, respect and support the spiritual well being of individuals ? Plan, agree and implement development activities to meet individuals needs ? Support individuals to continue therapies ? Identify the individual at risk of skin breakdown and undertake the appropriate risk assessment ? Move and position individuals ? Identify the physical health needs of individuals with mental health needs ? Support individuals with specific communication needs ? Administer medication to individuals ? Support individuals to prepare for, adapt to and manage change ? Prepare and support individuals to move and settle into new living environments ? Support individuals through bereavement ? Prepare, implement and evaluate agreed therapeutic group activities ? Contribute to raising awareness of health issues ? Carry out screening and referral assessment Assessment Process Each unit is assessed through the observation and questioning of normal activities within the workplace and the development of a portfolio within which learners collect electronic, paper and witness statement evidence that they have covered the skillsknowledge required for the unit. Learners are also required to create reflective accounts of their work for inclusion in the portfolio and apply knowledge and understanding of their work practices to the principles contained within each unit.
