Course Description

Health and Social Care - NVQ Level 2 Is this the right course for me? This qualification is the qualification for those who are working in a variety of care settings. Whether you are working in residential care or day care with older people or people with disabilities, this NVQ will soon be a basic requirement. What will I be doing? The NVQ is a 1 year programme but each candidate will be able to work through the different units at their own speed. Throughout the NVQ you will be supported by an assessor in your workplace. This is someone appointed by the College who is experienced in care work. They will help and guide you and prepare you for your assessments. They will also assess your work and ensure your portfolio of evidence contains enough evidence for you to claim the qualifications. All care candidates have to do 6 units of which: 4 are CORE And 2 are OPTIONAL The 4 CORE Units are: ? HSC21 - Communicate with, and complete records for individuals This Unit is mainly about communication with individuals. ? HSC22 - Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals This Unit is mainly centered around health and safety within the work place. ? HSC23 - Develop your knowledge and practice This Unit is mainly about your personal and professional development. ? HSC24 - Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well being of individuals. This Unit is about recognizing and supporting people in their choice of personal care and protection. Each of these has three or four elements. There is a choice of many optional units and you will need to select 2, depending on your area of work. Examples of some of these are: ? HSC213 - Provide food and drink for individuals ? HSC217 - Promote daily living ? HSC218 - Assist with personal care ? HSC223 - Contribute to moving and handling individuals The Units chosen depends very much on the NVQ candidate's job role. For example, if a candidate only works nights in a residential home, then because their job is very different from a candidate who works at a day centre for older people, they will choose different Units for their NVQ Health and Social Care. Usually candidates choose Units that they do as an everyday part of their work. You can after gaining your award add on extra units, as your area of work may change and you might need to gain further individual certification. Your assessor will advise you on how to do this. How long will the course last? Up to 2 years depending on how ready you are to be assessed. It is held on Tuesdays 1.00pm 3.00pm. What will I achieve? A City and Guilds NVQ in Health and Social Care which is nationally recognised. Location Main College Site
