Health and Social Care Applied A Level S&D Social Science & Childcare Board and Syllabus details Board: OCR - Syllabus: H103303503703 ASA level and Double award About the subject Students who choose Health and Social Care have diverse academic backgrounds and a range of different interests and abilities. The new syllabus covers a number of core subject areas including Communication Skills, Equal Opportunities and Ethical Issues optional units are wide ranging to suit many career aims and include Health Promotion, Anatomy and Physiology, Special Needs, Child Development, Health as a Lifestyle Choice, Behavioural Psychology, Human Growth and Development and Dietetics. Learning Styles Students will participate in discussions, undertake research, carry out presentations and use a wide range of media to produce portfolio units, which will aid career progression. Alongside this students will develop high order ICT, study and research skills. Work experience and voluntary work can be organised to help students achieve coursework objectives when appropriate, but are not mandatory. Subject combinations and progression Health and Social Care links well with a most other A level subjects Biology, Sociology, Food, Nutrition and Health, P.E and Psychology are typical combinations. Typical career progression includes: nursing, teaching, occupational therapy, sports studies, social studies, radiography, forensic science, social work, working with people with special needs, the forces etc. A number of students progress directly into employment in the health care sector. Subject modules and assessment There are 3 courses on offer within the A level AS - 3 unit course over one year A2 - 6 unit course over one or two years equivalent to an A level 2 A levels - 12 unit course over two years equivalent to two A levels For each course the mode of assessment is: 33% external exams + 67% student portfolioscoursework.
