Public Services - BTEC National Award Public Services BTEC National Award This is equivalent to one A Level & is completed in one year. You should combine this subject with other A levels. What is this course about? The course aims to prepare you both physically and mentally for the public service industries. You will learn about the public services including uniformed services and the careers they offer. You will develop skills such as self-discipline and fitness, learn transferable skills like teamwork, navigation and communication. By taking this course at Award level students are able to diversify their programme of study. Possible curriculum links may include Psychology, Law and Physical Education Sport. It can be studied alongside College+ Sport, The Sports Academy & FESCO activities. What topics will I study? You will study 3 core units Government, Policies and the Public Services Team Leadership in the Public Services Citizenship, Contemporary Society and the Public Services In addition you will study 3 specialist units. How will my work be assessed? Each of the 6 units is assessed as coursework there are no exams. You receive feedback on your progress throughout the course. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of activities, including written assignment, role play, oral assessment, presentations and practical performances. What skills do I need to succeed? You must have good independent study skills be able to meet deadlines and all the demands of the course. You need to have a keen interest in public services, be eager to be involved in and work as a member of a team and be an active participant in the outdoor pursuits and physical activities. You may be placed in unfamiliar situations so you will only get the most from the course if you are able to fully commit to it. You will need to show good time management so assignments are completed on time and in line with your guideline grade. This includes being able to balance college, social and paid working commitments by being prepared to work productively both in & out of college. You should also have a good grasp of the English language. What knowledge do I need to succeed? * Knowledge of the variety of public services and the requirements for their personnel * An understanding of outdoor adventurous activities and the requirements of expeditions. * An awareness of current affairs, both national and international, that affect the public services. * A clear understanding of how to work as an effective team member and the fundamentals of self discipline. What are the lessons like? Most of the course is classroom based but there are numerous opportunities to engage in practical activities such as outdoor and adventurous pursuits. Visits, professional speakers and opportunities to interact with the public services are a key component throughout. The course is the equivalent to three A levels but with no exams the workload is demanding and coursework requirements are intense at times. What students say about the course This is a new course for September 2010 and we are very excited by the opportunity this course will offer our students.
