Public Services (Uniformed) BTEC National Diploma BTEC National Diploma Equivalent to three A Levels. You cannot combine this course with other A Levels. What is this course about? The course aims to prepare you both physically and mentally for the public services industry. You will learn about the public services including uniformed services and the careers they offer, develop skills such as self-discipline and fitness, learn transferable skills like teamwork, navigation and communication, visit military and civilian bases and take part in outdoor pursuits and physical challenges. What topics will I study? Six core Units : Government, Policies and the Public Services Team Leadership in the Uniformed Public Services Citizenship, Contemporary Society and the Public Services Team Development in the Public Services Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Public Services Diversity and the Public Services. Twelve specialist Units: Physical Preparation and Fitness for the Uniformed Services International Perspectives for the Uniformed Public Services Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Skills for Water-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Crime and its Effects on Society Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services The Planning for and Management of Major Incidents Responding to Emergency Service Incidents Uniformed Public Services Employment Understanding the Criminal Justice System and Police Powers Communication and Technology in the Uniformed Public Services. How will my work be assessed? Assessment is 100%coursework there are no exams. Evidence for assessment is generated through a range of activities, including written assignments, role plays as well as oral and practical assessments. You receive feedback on your progress throughout assignments What skills do I need to succeed? You must have good independent study skills be able to meet deadlines and all the demands of the course. You need to have a keen interest in public services, be eager to be involved in and work as a member of a team and be an active participant in the outdoor pursuits and physical activities. You need to learn to self assess your own work, in conjunction with your teacher, to maximise grades. You should also have a good grasp of the English language. What knowledge do I need to succeed? ? Knowledge of the variety of public services and their requirements for personnel ? An interest in sport and outdoor pursuits ? An awareness of the topics covered by the course ? A clear understanding of how to work as an effective team member and the fundamentals of self discipline. What are the lessons like? Most of the course is classroom based but there are numerous opportunities to engage in practical activities such as outdoor and adventurous pursuits. Visits, professional speakers and opportunities to interact with the public services are a key component throughout, and there will be nominal charges to cover trips and speakers. The course is the equivalent to three A levels but with no exams the workload is demanding and coursework requirements are intense at times What have I got to do to do well? ? Be able to learn independently ? Engage in all practical activities and outdoor pursuits ? Maintain a good level of fitness ? Complete your weekly assignments on time and in line with your guideline grade ? Maintain behaviour appropriate to that expected of any public service employee. This qualification provides an excellent foundation for those, who would like to gain employment in the public services sector with organisations such as:- ?
