It is a dynamic industry that is involved in everything from house building to sports stadia, shopping centre's to hospitals, roads to power stations, tunnel's to dams, the list is endless as are the opportunities. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Health and safety are of paramount importance in the construction industry and we places great emphasis on this part of your education. If you enrol on, and undertake any course in the construction department you will be required to provide and wear at all times (in the college site area and whilst surveying) mandatory PPE as follows; 1) Approved protective footwear with ankle support (Rigger type boots are not allowed) 2) Approved safety helmet 3) Approved hi-visibility vest 4) Approved gloves It is also expected that you will attend college in suitable work wear/clothes, it will be possible to order this directly with suppliers at college enrolment. Aim of this course If your interests lie in becoming a plumber this course will provide you with the foundations required to commence your career, this is a practically based course which will allow you to learn and develop various skills relating to the trade. Course modules Science of water Hot and cold water drainage Heating systems Working with copper and steel pipes - including bending, jointing and soldering methods Safe use of, and working with lead in roofing environments Planning and installation of kitchen/sanitary equipment Working with plastic pipes and fittings What are the entry requirements? You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. You will also be required to complete a British Plumbing Employers Council Test. How will I learn? This is a practical based course, where you will learn through underpinning theory sessions. Practical assignments are carried out in the college site area where you will learn key principles. This course is supported by individual and group tutorial sessions. When will I be expected to be in college? You will be expected to be in college 4 days per week, the actual days will depend upon the college timetable. Your direct teaching will take place over 3.5 days with enrichment activities, e.g. wide variety of sporting activities, visits, master classes, etc being available on the remaining 0.5 day. Full attendance and excellent punctuality is essential on this course. How will I be assessed? Examining body: C>EMPBR Assessment is via 12 computer based knowledge tests, and practical work with a skills test at the end of the course. What if I need support? The college provides a safe and up-to-date working environment with many sources of information available in resource-based learning centres. Where possible, we will provide additional learning support as you need it and discuss your progress through tutorials. Further study Upon successfully completing this course you may progress onto the Level 3 technical certificate in plumbing. Please note in order to complete an NVQ in plumbing it is necessary that you are in full time employment as the various blocks of the programme must be assessed in the workplace. Career progression Successful completion of the course will place you in an excellent position to obtain employment and start your career. *The tuition fee is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19 or over tuition fees will apply. Help may be available with fees, please ask. Government funding may be available through apprenticeship or train to gain schemes.
