Course Description

Physics AS/A2 Course Level: Level 3 - Further Education equivalent to AS/A2 Level, BTEC National Diploma or NVQ3 Reference Number: QMS3SS22/BAFAP Introduction Physics is the study of the physical world around us, in particular matter, energy, and how they interact with each other. The laws of physics underpin all the other sciences. The AS course follows on from GCSE Double Award Science or single subject Physics. It introduces new topics as well as adding greater depth and understanding to concepts already met. Practical work is used extensively to reinforce theory and develop the student's laboratory skills. What will be covered in the course? AS level G481: Mechanics - motion, forces in action, work and energy G482: Electrons, Waves and Photons - electric current, resistance, DC circuits, waves and quantum physics G483: Practical Skills in Physics 1 - internal assessment of practical skills A2 level G484: Newtonian World - Newton's laws and momentum, circular motion and oscillations, thermal physics G485: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics - electric and magnetic fields, capacitors and exponential decay, nuclear physics, medical imaging, modelling the universe G486: Practical Skills in Physics 2 - internal assessment of practical skills Course dates and times Offered at various times, please contact us for further information. What qualification(s) can be gained? AS Physics (1 year) or A2 Physics (2 years) How is the course assessed? AS Physics G481: Mechanics - 1 hour written exam in January G482: Electrons, Waves and Photons - 1 hour 45 min written exam in June G483: Practical Skills in Physics 1 - Internal assessment A2 Physics G484: Newtonian World - 1 hour written exam in January G485: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics - 1 hour 45 min written exam in June G486: Practical Skills in Physics 2 - Internal assessment Additional costs Purchase of the course textbook and a scientific calculator are required. OCR Physics AS, R. Hackett and R. Hutchings, Heinemann, ISBN: 978 0 435691 82 0 Attendance and additional study hours Four taught sessions per week, totalling 5 hours tuition. Further information An Interview is required to join this course. We use a wide range of practical exercises and interactive website materials to add interest to the course and support student learning. Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands. A-level Physics is an important pre-requisite for entry into University courses in Physics and Engineering. It is also a valuable additional qualification for students wishing to undertake further studies in Medicine, Architecture, Mathematics and other scientific subjects.
