Forget the sports stars! The people who really command respect in sport are the greenkeepers and turf specialists! The 18 module National Diploma course is designed primarily for students who want to achieve a supervisory or junior management role within the industry. This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of both the theory and the practice of greenkeeping and groundsmanship, the science of sportsturf, the use of machines and the development of management skills. An exciting element of this course is a term-long period of paid work experience in the sportsturf industry. Recent students have enjoyed once in a lifetime opportunities at top sportsturf venues throughout the world. List of Modules Year 1 ? Land Based Machinery Operations - Use and care of specialist sportsturf equipment. ? Sustainable Development - This module raises the awareness of sustainable issues to encourage a sense of responsibility and citizenship, to appreciate the needs of others both now and in the future to respect and value the diversities of life. ? Principles of Plant and Soil Science - Processes of growth and development of plants, nutrients, soil and water. ? Horticultural Skills and Plant Knowledge - The use and identification of plants and shrubs for landscape purposes. ? Turf Production and Maintenance - Establish a grass surface using seed and turf. ? Turf Culture - The module concentrates on the factors that will affect the establishment of turf surfaces. ? Sports Turf Maintenance - The presentation and preparation of turf grass surfaces. ? Contract Management - During this module you will study the planning and monitoring, estimating, tendering and programming of contract work. ? Sports Groundsmanship - The maintenance and preparation of sports surfaces, e.g. football, tennis and rugby. Year 2 ? Land Based Estate Construction Repair and Maintenance Skills - This module will allow you to develop the skills to maintain surfaces, fences, walls etc. and any other structures found within an estate. ? Investigative Project in the Horticulture Sector - An externally set module to prepare you for management tasks. ? Horticultural Business Accounting and Management - Preparing budgets, records and accounts. ? Work Related Experience in the Horticultural Sector - Six months placement at a sporting venue. ? Horticultural Design Principles - The surveying and design of sports facilities. ? Specialist Horticultural Machinery - Specialist equipment is an essential part of any horticultural enterprise. This module gives you the opportunity to investigate that equipment, its maintenance and repair. ? Sports Turf and Non-turf Surface Construction - How to build a sports surface, e.g. a football pitch or golf green including artificial surfaces. ? Horticultural Surveying and Levelling - The surveying and design of sports facilities. ? Turf Irrigation and Drainage - The management and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems. Industrial / Work Experience Paid work experience for 6 months at top sporting venue, with placements such as at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course and The All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon. The placement period is from April to September in the second year of the course. Assessments Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports.
