Mechanical Engineering V7836, HND - Level 5 (EDEXCEL) UCAS Code(s): 003H Qualification Obtained: BTEC Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering About this Course: This course comprises the following 6 core units: mechanical principles, engineering, design, engineering science, project, analytical methods, business management techniques. To complete the qualification, a further 4 (HNC) or 1 (HND) units must be studied. These may include the following: plant and process principles, fluid mechanics, engineering thermodynamics, materials engineering, applications of pneumatics and hydraulics, plant and technology, health and safety and risk assessment, plant maintenance and management, introduction to machine tools, computer-aided machining, programmable logic controllers, mechatronics systems principles, instrumentation and control principles, heat transfer and combustion, plant operation and performance, managing the work of individuals and teams, advanced computer aided design techniques, project management. Entry Requirements: Full-time courses in Engineering Technology, leading to higher level study at Colleges and Universities Assessment Methods: A high standard of tuition Close liaison with industry Extensive up-to-date equipment Continuous assessment A pleasant environment conducive to learning Progression to Higher Education and industry Special Features: Continuous assessment and/or examination. Course Options: Immediate career prospects are as a Technician Mechanical Engineer or in Engineering Management. Many past students are now employed by major companies like British Aerospace, BNFL, GEC and Ford Motor Company as design, production or project engineers. Teaching Methods: These can include lectures, practical activities in workshops, laboratory work and demonstrations, directed and independent learning, group work, tutorials and seminars. The weekly timetable averages at 13-15 hours per week. There is a facility for one-to one tutorials. The School of Engineering and Computing offers an Open Door policy whereby teaching staff and some resources such as computer rooms can be accessed on an informal basis throughout the week. Skills Developed: General: numeracy, communication, ability to apply technology, the managing and developing of one's self, being able to work with and relate to others, the ability to apply design and be creative. Specific: knowledge of the underlying mathematical and scientific principles used in mechanical engineering. knowledge of the design and operation of mechanical engineering systems. ability to analyse and model mechanical engineering systems. An awareness of Health and Safety issues including risk assessment and appropriate legislation. Knowledge and understanding of the functions, structures and inter-relationships of an engineering business, knowledge of project management principles, methodologies, tools and techniques that may be used in any industry, the professions and the public sector. Similar Courses: We offer a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering. This has many subject units common to the HND in Mechanical Engineering.
