Mathematics - Use of Maths AS/A2 Level (AQA) WHAT'S ON THE COURSE? Why study Use of Maths? Mathematics is a fascinating and rewarding area of study and students work in an atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive. The Maths facilities are excellently equipped and provide a first class learning environment. In addition there is an extensive support programme designed to provide extended opportunities for successful and timely help for those who need it. Use of Maths is a relatively new A Level subject that will appeal to a wide range of students. It involves the application of Mathematical techniques in real situations and will involve the use of ICT throughout. There is less actual content than in a traditional A Level Mathematics course and more emphasis on problem solving and applying skills. WHAT'S ON THE COURSE? The Use of Maths course is modular course with three modules giving an AS Level in Use of Maths and six modules leading to an A Level in Use of Maths. During the first year you will study Algebra, Data Analysis and Decision Maths. In the second year you will take a further three modules - Calculus, Mathematical Applications and Mathematical Comprehension. All units are equally weighted. What the students say Hannah Goodrich - Shavington High School I chose this as a fifth A Level because although Maths isn't my favourite subject it's a useful course to study alongside some of my other A Level subjects. I gained an A* in GCCE Maths which is why I decided to carry it on at college. I've been able to build on what I learnt at school and think it has been a very worthwhile programme. WHAT'S THE SCHEDULE AND FEES? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? 2 Years. Full Time. WHEN DOES IT START? 05 September 2011. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Tuition fees are free for this course (home students only). However, for students aged 19+, there is a fee of ?50 per year, which may be remitted if you are on income-based benefits. IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR ME? WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR? This A-Level is designed for students who enjoy Maths and wish to use and apply its concepts in real and interesting situations. It is particularly suitable for students taking AS subjects in which there are mathematical demands beyond CGSE. WHAT CAN I DO NEXT? Students will normally take this course as part of a full time AS programme. Use of Maths will complement many programmes of study such as Science, Humanities or Business / IT, as it will enable the Maths content of these courses to be tackled with more confidence. You might also consider progressing from this A-Level to study a Forensic Science Foundation Degree. This is a two year HE course in at South Cheshire College consisting of biology, chemistry and forensic science. If you are successful you can then study at a UNIVERSITY for a third year and achieve an Honours Degree in Forensic Science. The entry requirements for the Forensic Science Foundation Degree are one A-Level in either biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics.
