Mathematics - Further Maths AS/A2 Level (Edexcel) WHAT'S ON THE COURSE? Why study Further Maths? Further Maths A-level can be taken in addition to the 'single' Maths. It is designed for students with a particular aptitude and strong enjoyment of the subject. This subject is an excellent preparation for degree courses with a high Mathematical content. Apart from Maths itself these include courses such as Engineering, Physics, Economics and Accountancy. Mathematics is a fascinating and rewarding area of study and at South Cheshire each student works in an atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive. Members of the Maths team use a variety of teaching strategies including ILT to ensure that the experience of students is both satisfying and rewarding. The Maths facilities are excellently equipped and provide a first class learning environment. In addition there is an extensive support programme designed to provide extended opportunities for successful and timely help for those who need it. WHAT'S ON THE COURSE? All students study a two year course in A Level Further Maths. The first year of the course is at AS Level and the second year is at A2 Level. The Further Maths course is modular with three modules giving an AS Level in Further Maths and six modules leading to an A Level in Maths. During the first year you will take one module of 'Further Pure' Maths which extends the knowledge and techniques encountered in the single Maths course. Among the topics studied are number systems and methods of proof. In addition you will take 2 applied modules in Statistics and Decision Maths. In the second year you will take at least one more 'Further Pure' module plus a variety of optional modules which will extend your knowledge as an 'all round' Mathematician. What else can you do on this course? A Levels are not just academic subjects studied in the classroom. At South Cheshire College we try to make your learning as relevant as possible, by including visits to exhibitions and employers where you can see the real-world application of your subject. What the students say Tim Bennet - Shavington High School I'm good at Maths and decided to continue with it at college. I've already taken A Level Maths in a year and have now moved on to a Further Maths programme. I enjoy the course and I'm planning to go on to Nottingham University to study Maths at degree level. I settled into life at college very quickly and have loved every minute of it. I'm keeping my options open for the future but college has given me a solid grounding from which to progress. WHAT'S THE SCHEDULE AND FEES? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? 2 Years. Full Time. WHEN DOES IT START? 05 September 2011. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Tuition fees are free for this course (home students only). However, for students aged 19+, there is a fee of ?50 per year, which may be remitted if you are on income-based benefits. IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR ME? WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR? To do well on this A-level course you should feel confident with algebra, enjoy working systematically and be interested in understanding the reasoning behind mathematical rules as on the 'single' Maths course. In addition you must have a genuine enjoyment of the subject given that you will probably be spending nearly half of your time at college doing Maths!. WHAT CAN I DO NEXT? We are advised by many university lecturers in Engineering that there is no better preparation for their course than the Further Pure units.
